Blue & Red Beds
Going through 1 collection of wool blankets today. It appears all's as it should be in the land of folded and unfolded things.
This and this are worth a look

SUNDAY SUNDAY
= a perfect breakfast on the balcony.
makes me think of "the many little meals" of Rose Carrarini's bakery

Mme ALICE
is 8 1/2 weeks old. She makes her way here in 10 days.
(see the heart marking on her head? and lovely red ticking on her legs and snout)

And as an addendum to Aug. 14th's post:
the image of Wes Anderson and many animals, Chris Kline gave me this link to Deyrolle Taxidermy - where that image was taken.

La Rencontre: 3 of 35
Anna Torma, above
embroidery on cotton, approx. 18" x 14"
Janice Wright-Cheney, below
felt roses, found object
cotton embroidery floss on linen
my piece, below is a drawing installation
graphite and coloured pencil on paper (20" x 16")
11 washcloths on a wood shelf
I know it's hard to see, but the shelf is also represented in the drawing, hung on the white wall, but it's empty.
I intended the work would be installed on a white wall. Should've specified that to the curator. I can take it as a lesson in not assuming gallery walls will be white ...in any case the bloody red makes for a super feminine read, or something. At first I wondered if that was the point but then i saw the other walls: taupe.

Catholic Churches
in rural Québec.
On the way home we stopped to admire a few.
Totally bonkers.
Every time I go into these massive, ornate structures I'm reminded of Catholicism's influence on my practice - in terms of ritual, decoration, symmetry, the use of linens and the need for external validation and absolution.
For this I can thank my fraternal Slavic lineage and my Scandanavian Mum for converting.
Fell immediately in love with the string of text across the altar.

The BEAUTY of ORGANISATION
Visiting MMAQ - Maison des Métiers d'Art de Québec (beware the music when you click) today in Québec City. Lovely textile, ceramic and sculpture studios. The one devoted entirely to wood turning (containing 10 lathes) knocked my socks off.
... In QC this week for the vernissage of La Roncontre (The Meeting), a group exhibition presented by Galerie Diagonale at Maison Hamel Bruneau, Sept. 10 - Dec. 21 2008, as part of Québec's 400th birthday celebrations. The show features work by 35 artists from Québec, Canada and Wales. My work includes the drawing up there in my blog header as part of an installation.
more soon.

September Suppers
Carrot soup with fresh arugula, crunchy and tingly radishes, tender yellow & green beans, raw and steamed, respectively, with a few shakes of sea salt and fresh black pepper ... all pictured here in the prettiest yellow crockery belonging to Rebecca and David (Horace and Roma's people).
Thank you, R+D, for letting me stay and care for your dear hounds!
Their temperaments and faces (and Roma's hips) resemble darling Elskling.

And thank you too for the use of your copy of Larousse Gastronimique by Prosper Montagné. Originally published in 1938, this hefty number contains all the gory details on French cooking.
It's everything I wanted to read for two weeks ...and hence the vegetal suppers.

DUMBO
One of the current exhibitions at the Vancouver Art gallery -Krazy! The Delirious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art- features original cells from the 1941 motion picture DUMBO
They're exquisite.
I attempted to surreptitiously take pictures of them but there were guards everywhere. Shary tells me she managed to snap some & will send them to me to post.
(I took the above image from the Culver City Animation Art Gallery site which sells cells).
In one of the highwall galleries the film was projected on all four walls, with comfy chairs to lie back in.
Sitting there in the cool, dark room with tears in my eyes for dearest Dumbo ...was one of those near-perfect experiences.
Also in the exhibition are original drawings by Lynda Barry, mainly from her book 100 Demons. I did get some digital shots of her work and purchased the new book: What It Is. Buy it here and read a review in the NY Times here.
