The last of the peonies this week in the hot sun + a sweet little graffiti on the wall of a dépanneur near Metro Beaubien.

dreary -> cheery

I opened the drapes yesterday morning to this pitiful, salty sight and thought how well it characterizes the grim stage we're at, when winter feels like it might never give way to spring. I filled the watering can and brought it back to the window where the geranium, orchid, hibiscus and rosemary are over-wintering, gleaning as much sun as they can ... to bust out these encouraging little buds and flowers! It seems foolhardy to say so but if predictions are accurate it's possible that once the week is through the temperature could stop dipping down below zero for a while. As in, until next fall?

F%$#ing beautiful resplendent flowers on Clark and Farimont. Ruffly! It's a sublime experience looking at these, knowing that given the opportunity they'd strangle anything, including us if we were to stand next to them still and long enough.

New Orleans day 5

E. and D.'s beautiful 1923 shotgun house, Chaoyte and Danica, and the glorious passion flower vine that grows around the back porch.

Horse Chestnut

Aesculus hippocastanum.
Apparently poisonous to horses, but not to deer.

I familiar with it only from 18th c. France where the juice was extracted as a whitener for linen and wool. I think this is where the term "bluing" may have originated? I'm told the nut extract is also a good venous tonic.

I'm meeting this giant for the first time here on PEI and marveling. They can grow up to 36 metres tall! During a walk after supper on the night I arrived I came upon one and was astonished by its splendor and height and angelfood conical flowers. I've since learned they're native to the mountains of the Balkans and small areas of northern Greece, Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria. And that the flower is the symbol of the city of Kiev.

poppies

they're blooming!
These coral beauties live in my neighbour's very considered garden. She's got flora blooming in succession all spring into summer: crocus, tulips, grape hyacinth, lilac, peonies...

magnolia

Impossibly big, lush magnolias enough to make your eyes roll back in your head before the first tree has even peeped a leaf. Every spring I say this and every spring it's truer than the last- I can't believe such beautiful things happen every year for us to see.

Here in Montréal the magnolias have popped - mid-May - and will be gone in a wink. Such beautiful beauties.
