Jeanne Baré

The first woman to circumnavigate the globe despite a French royal ordinance forbidding women to travel on French naval vessels. So she did it dressed as a man. A gifted botanist and herbalist like her mother, Jeanne wanted to collect plants from all over the world. She brought two plants back to France: baréttia (since reclassified) from Madagascar, and bougainvillia from Brazil, which took the name of the Captain of the storeship Étoile.

A biography by Glynis Ridley was published last month.
There is a npr interview with Ms. Ridley and another interview with her on Invisible Paris.
